Pregnyl is a hormone used to induce ovulation in women and to treat infertility. A woman suffering from primary ovarian failure cannot take Pregnyl. In order to cause the release of an egg (ovulation), it is given after completing another medication (menotropins). Primary ovarian failure (ovaries not producing eggs properly) is not a good candidate for this drug.

The hormone HCG is used to treat hypogonadism in men, a condition in which the body produces insufficient testosterone.

During growth, HCG is also used to treat young boys whose testicles have not descended into the scrotum as expected. Boys between the ages of 4 and 9 are usually treated with HCG for this condition. Occasionally, it is used to help certain boys develop normally sexually. Male sex hormones (such as testosterone) are released by the testes.

This medication is not insulin.

The use of Pregnyl as a weight loss aid has not been approved by the FDA and has not been proven to be any more effective than reducing the diet’s calories.
